Best Materials Science Hack Challenge 1
This challenge will have hackers analyze crystallographic nodal data of typical microstructures found in formed metals to attempt to reproduce them with a desired grain size distribution. Hackers will implement RNN, GAN or any AI network to learn the sequential assignment of orientations on the crystallographic nodal graph to reproduce the learned distributions. Typically simulations like these on a large scale can take weeks to months to run, so any gains in performance will be rewarded bonus points!

Participant Agreement to MacHacks Code of Conduct, Terms and Condition and Waiver and Release of Liability
By participating in MacHacks, held by the MacHacks team you are liable to the code of conduct, terms and conditions detailed in this document. By signing this document and participating in MacHacks, you are fully consenting to comply with the rules, instructions and procedures presented by MacHacks organizers. Furthermore, any violation of these rules may result in consequences at the discretion of the MacHacks team, including removal from the hackathon and/or retraction of prizes. The participant agrees that they, themselves are responsible for damages or injury self-caused or towards other persons.
By participating in MacHacks, held by MacHacks team, you agree to be obligated by these terms and rules of this document and all other applicable documents.
Code of Conduct
I understand and agree to the following:
o I am at least 18 years old and have represented myself authentically on all MacHacks registration forms.
o I understand that all the programming and development of my project must take place during the hackathon allocated time. I confirm that my submitted project is of my own work and that of my team’s originality. I may use outside resources that are appropriately licensed but those outside resources have to be properly and fairly copyrighted. I understand that all volunteers, judges, mentors, or staff involved in the hackathon are only allowed to counsel.
o I understand that I and/or my project will not cause harm, violate any applicable laws and/or create destruction in any way to any groups of individuals.
o I understand that all the selected prize winners, made through recommendation of judges, are final and that such prizes will be distributed by the MacHacks team’s appropriate personnel.
o I understand that I may be required to showcase my code to judges and the MacHacks team for the purpose of judging. I understand that I will need to present my project and may be asked about the development process.
o I understand that I am responsible for my actions and conduct myself in a respectful, appropriate, non-abusive manner to all individuals.
o I understand any inappropriate acts, unwanted and disruptive intrusion (i.e. zoombombing) on any platform or to any individual during the hackathon will result in consequences including removal from MacHacks.
Terms and Conditions
o The releasees will make no claim to ownership of any projects created during MacHacks. Releasees will hold no liability for any legal issues that may arise from the hackathon.
o I understand that during MacHacks, I may obtain access to developments and information that belong to other participants, sponsors, and/or other third parties and that no ownership, rights, title from other participants, sponsors, and/or third parties in this Agreement is allowed to be transferred to me.
o I understand that all services for the participants during MacHacks are provided as-is will no guarantees that the services will meet my requirements, nor remain uninterrupted, error-free, or free from viruses. MacHacks is not liable for any services provided by sponsors and other third parties during MacHacks.
o Permission for Use of Name, Image and Statements: I hereby grant the MacHacks team, sponsors and judges of MacHacks the right to use my image, voice, appearance and also any images of my project and developments made during MacHacks for purpose of research, education, publications, webpages, or other related use. I waiver and release the MacHacks team of MacHacks from any claim or liability relating to the images and abandon the right to examine the images by publication. I acknowledge and agree that I will not receive payment of any kind related to this permission release.
o MacHacks reserves the full right to modify, postpone or cancel any part of MacHacks with no advance notice. MacHacks is not responsible to provide any reimbursements or compensations associated with cancellation of MacHacks.Waiver and Release of Liability, Assumption of Risk, and Indemnity Agreement
○ Waiver: In acknowledging the known and unknown possibility of injury while engaging in Machacks, and in considering the right to engage in all activities in this event, I hereby knowingly and willingly enter into this waiver and release of liability for myself, my heirs, executors, managers, assigns and personal representatives, and hereby waive any and all privileges, claims or causes of action of any kind resulting from my involvement in the case; and the MacHacks team, its affiliates, administrators, participants, agents, attorneys, staff, volunteers, leaders, predecessors, successors and assigns are hereby released and forever discharged for any physical or psychological injury, including but not limited to sickness, paralysis, death, harm, economic or emotional loss that I may suffer as a direct result of my participation in all activities, including traveling to and from an event related to this event.
○ Assumptions of Risks: I recognise that a 3-day hackathon is physically gruelling, including the risk of exhaustion and sleep deprivation. Hackathon participation brings with it some inherent risks that cannot be avoided regardless of the precautions taken to prevent injury. Specific risks vary from one activity to another but include: 1) minor injuries such as cuts, bruises, and sprains; 2) serious injuries such as eye or vision loss; joint or back injuries; heart attacks; psychological pain; emotional loss; and concussions; and 3) catastrophic injuries, including paralysis and death. I certify that I am physically fit, have been properly prepared or trained to engage in an activity or event, and have not been advised not to participate by a qualified medical professional. I certify that there are no health-related reasons or complications that prevent my involvement in this activity or event. I have read the preceding paragraphs, and I recognise, understand and appreciate these and other risks inherent in the Operation. I hereby assert that my participation is voluntary and that I knowingly assume all such risks.
○ Indemnification and Hold Harmless: I consent to indemnify and hold the MacHacks team harmless from any and all lawsuits or acts of any sort for liability, damages, compensation or otherwise sustained by me or someone else on my behalf, including attorney's fees and any associated costs, if there is a conflict arising out of any claims made by me or by someone else acting on my behalf. If any of these forms of costs are incurred by the MacHacks team, I promise to reimburse MacHacks. I further agree to defend and indemnify the MacHacks team from and against all third party lawsuits for losses, injuries or damages resulting in any way as a result of my involvement in the Hackathon, including any claims arising out of the reckless or negligent actions of myself as a participant and the MacHacks team as the organiser or sponsor of the event. I shall be relieved of this responsibility to MacHacks only if it is found that the team was the sole party responsible for the loss, injury or damage to the third party or if it is determined that MacHacks deliberately caused the loss, injury or damage.
○ In the event that I need medical care or treatment, I consent to be financially responsible for any costs incurred as a result of such treatment. I know and accept why I should have my own health care.
○ In the event that any harm to equipment or facilities happens as a result of my deliberate acts, recklessness or negligence, I accept and consent to be held responsible for any and all costs associated with my own actions.)
○ The foregoing waiver and assumption of risks agreement is intended to be as broad and inclusive as is permitted by the laws of the GTA and that if any portion thereof is held invalid, it is agreed that the balance shall, notwithstanding, continue in full legal force and effect.
In the event that any provision contained in this Code of Conduct, Terms and Release of Liability Agreement is considered to be null or invalid, or if any word, condition, phrase or section of this Agreement is found to be illegal or otherwise unenforceable, the remainder of this Agreement shall remain in full force and effect as long as that clause is not affected. If a court should find any provision of this Agreement to be invalid or unenforceable, but that by limiting said provision it would become valid and enforceable, then said provision shall be deemed to be written, construed, and enforced as so limited.
I, the undersigned participant, affirm that I am of the age of 18 years or older(and if not, a legal parent/guardian must sign), and that I am freely signing this Agreement; I certify that I have read this Agreement, that I fully understand its content and that this release cannot be modified orally; I am aware that this is a release of liability and a contract and that I am signing it of my own free will.
- Each team has to create a 5 minute video about their chosen challenge explaining their innovation and submission deadline is due 11.00AM EST Feb 7.
- There will be no live presentations and your video submitted will be counted as your final submission.
